Exploring the Impact of Smartphones in 2007

Updated: Oct 8

I am thrilled to share that I am currently composing a new work for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, under the baton of conductor Jac Van Steen. This piece is part of an exciting project commissioned by BBC Radio 3, where 25 composers have been selected to create new works reflecting on significant events from each year of the first quarter of the 21st century.

My composition will focus on the year 2007, a pivotal moment in our modern lives marked by the launch of the smartphone. This technological advancement has profoundly changed how we connect with one another, bringing both positive and negative consequences. Through this work, I aim to explore the duality of connectivity—how it has enabled us to be closer than ever before while simultaneously creating new forms of distance and isolation.

Using distinct ringtones as the foundation of the composition material, I plan to create a world of sound that captures the essence of our increasingly digital lives. The piece will reflect the excitement and promise of the smartphone era while also delving into the complexities and challenges it has introduced into our daily existence.

The 25 new commissions, each reflecting on significant events from the years 2000 to 2025, will premiere on Tom Service’s Saturday Morning programme starting January 25, 2025, and will be broadcast throughout the week. This initiative not only highlights the innovative spirit of contemporary composition but also aims to engage audiences in conversations about the cultural and social implications of these pivotal moments in our recent history.

I am eager to share more about this work as it develops and look forward to seeing how it resonates with audiences in the context of our ever-evolving relationship with technology.
