Dancing Through Queer Spaces: Zip, Zap, Boooooogie!!!

Writer's picture: Jasper DommettJasper Dommett

One of my recent projects, Zip, Zap, Boooooogie!!!, was written for the London Philharmonic Orchestra and dancers from Trinity Laban, and explores the electric atmosphere of a queer club. The piece brings to life the excitement of first encounters, self-discovery, and the vibrant energy found within these spaces, reflecting the many layers of queer club culture through sound and movement.

Set in a queer club, Zip, Zap, Boooooogie!!! blurs the lines between classical music and the pulse of club beats, using microtonality to evoke the sense of freedom and fluidity often found in these environments. The rhythmic elements, sharp transitions, and shifting moods within the piece mirror the emotional highs and moments of doubt experienced in the club, where identities and boundaries are constantly being redefined.

A particularly rewarding aspect of this project was working with dancers, which allowed for a dynamic interplay between the music and physical expression. The choreography, combined with the music’s driving momentum, amplified the piece’s exploration of anticipation, discovery, and expression. Through Zip, Zap, Boooooogie!!!, I sought to reflect the rich emotional spectrum of queer spaces—places that hold joy, connection, and self-realisation.

Bringing this work to the stage was a brilliant opportunity to further push the boundaries of how queer experiences can be represented in classical music, and I look forward to seeing how it continues to resonate with audiences.

Reviews

Zip, Zap, Boooooogie!!! has received positive reviews for its energy and emotional depth:

  • “Zip, Zap, Boooooogie!!! by Jasper Dommett uses queer nightlife and romance as its inspiration, and it's a super piece of music... Dommett's voice feels undeniably intoxicating, with percussive rhythm. Any choreographer in their right mind would kill for this kind of music to create to.” — Broadway World

  • “In Zip, Zap, Boooooogie!!!, Jasper Dommett tells the story of a first romantic encounter in a queer club setting, taking the listener through a range of emotions... sharp transitions between states that refrained from sounding jarring.” — The Live Review
