Programme Note

Melys was written in response to the painting on the front by welsh artist, Elfyn Lewis. The thick busy textures and bursts of colours created a huge palate of sounds which I could use as the basis for this piece. Whilst the painting may not have a sense of structure I decided to create a structure within my music, so the listener is able to hear the piece in a coherent manner. The extended Rondo form I created allowed me to develop my ideas whilst also giving me the room to experiment with new colours and sections, like Elfyn does in his artwork. The striking sweeps and splashes created rhythmic lines and melodic gestures throughout the piece. As the painting turns more into one block of colour so does the soundworld I have created. The ending Coda is orchestrated as one homogentisic sound with no one instrument standing at the forefront of the

music.
